You’ll have 5 days to build three complex weapons mixing medieval bushcraft skills and modern engineering – in your own outdoor camp. These projects have been designed to stretch your skills! No simple crafting here…
Whittle your own slingshot from a hazel branch and learn how to use it skilfully before competing in a slingshot tournament. Carve your own longbow, whittle arrows, and cast a unique arrowhead out of pewter. Work with different woods to design and build a trebuchet and learn the skills to handle it with ultimate accuracy.
Throughout the week you’ll also be mastering another very important survival skill - food! Learn how to make spiced hot chocolate, pancakes, baked apples, porridge with honey, and spit-roast game, all cooked medieval-style on an open fire.
This Halloween, learn the skills needed to outwit unearthly creatures and endure a chilling fantasy world with the ultimate bushcraft survival mission.
The Hive takes its educational purpose very seriously. Whilst we don’t promote the use of weapons, we do see the benefit of maker and bushcraft projects that truly enthuse young people. We thought long and hard about proposing a mission focused on weaponry and felt that ultimately the nature of the projects proposed meant that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. To provide context and avoid anything gratuitous, we set the projects in a “building” rather than a “fighting” context and gave the mission a fantasy angle.
Please note that our daily itinerary is a guide, and some activities may need to be changed or rescheduled when circumstances occasionally make it difficult for us to run them, including poor weather. We’ll always do our best to offer enjoyable alternatives and, wherever possible, run the planned activity on an alternative day.
