Accredited Level 1 Training (Introduction)

This accredited two-day course is designed to provide trainees with an introduction to the Forest School ethos and principles. It includes basic practical woodland skills, methods of identifying woodland species and an exploration of the importance of play, creativity and child-centered approaches in Forest School activities.

The course is accredited through National Awarding Organisation AIM Qualifications & Assessment Group. The Qualification Number is K/616/9670 and the course specification can be downloaded here. 

The course aims to build knowledge and confidence and it is open to trainees with little or no experience of working in the outdoors. There are no entry requirements and it is particularly well-suited to schools, nurseries and community settings looking to build the confidence of their Forest School parent, teacher and community volunteers with a short accredited course, delivered in an easy format.

    Curriculum

    The Forest School Introduction course consists of 5 learning outcomes:

    • Understanding the Forest School approach to learning
    • Being able to participate in Forest School
    • Understanding methods of identification of woodland species
    • Understanding how Forest School impacts on the woodland environment
    • Understanding hazards at Forest School


    Course content is listed below.

    • Outline the Forest School approach to learning and development
    • Identify ways in which Forest School supports the development of the whole person
    • State ways that play can benefit participants at Forest School
    • Observe a Forest School session run by a qualified Level 3 Forest School Programme Leader
    • State the roles of the Forest School Leader and other adults at the session observed
    • Participate in a range of Forest School experiences
    • Name methods of identifying local woodland species, providing examples
    • Identify how Forest School experiences may impact on the woodland environment
    • Identify different types of hazards and their associated risks
    • State how these risks at Forest School may be reduced


    Entry Requirements

    There are no entry requirements for this qualification.


      Resources & Course Materials

      As part of the training programme, you will receive course materials, ongoing tutor support and online best practice examples and inspiration. The resources are accessible through the Student Hub on The Hive website and include:

      • A digital copy of our Training Manual (you will also receive a hard copy)
      • A simple portfolio template to guide you through the short portfolio development process (digital and hard copy)
      • A reading list and electronic copies of all the resources used during the course
      • Support from our team throughout your training


      Cost & Payment Options

      The cost of the Level 1 Forest School Introduction training course is £250.

      We offer 3 payment options:

        1. You can pay the full amount for the course by booking online below, or over the phone by calling 020 3435 6848. 
        2. You can pay in 2 instalments: the first instalment is due at the time of booking, the second is due 4 weeks before the start of the course. Just call us to pay this way.
        3. If you receive childcare vouchers, you are able to use them to pay for your course. Just call us to pay this way.
