Do you know that kites have been used for all sorts: fishing, lifting Ninja Warriors, acting as lightning rod conductors and even delivering letters and newspapers! On this mission, we’re going to make kites that take photos from the sky. Are you ready for an epic selfie?
Working in your team, you’ll get to build up the camera and Raspberry Pi kit. You’ll learn basic computing to allow you to take photos along with getting height readings and GPS co-ordinates.
Once you’ve got the tech ready, you’ll build the kite itself, learning kite making techniques and how to work with different kite materials like bamboo and Tyvek.
Then, you'll be ready for trial flights! You'll learn flying techniques, you'll test the technology and you'll start recording data for long-distance mapping. Your final challenge will be to unlock ‘secret shapes’ in the landscape to reveal hidden clues and ‘stitch’ images together to create your very own kite mapped Collage.
At the end of the mission, everyone will have a go at a selfie from the sky! Children will go home with their very own high quality Tyvek kite.
