Hidden in the mountains of the Austria-Germany border lies a vertical city. Nearly 500 storeys tall, this colossal complex holds an entire human habitat within one massive skyscraper! With land becoming scarce and the population growing, we needed a sustainable plan for the future of humankind. Building a vertical city was the perfect solution to overcrowding and a way of preserving biodiversity, saving precious land from being destroyed for building. Inside there’s everything the human race could ever need to survive: homes, work spaces, restaurants, parks, cinemas, farming and much more…
Sounds too good to be true? Well, that’s because it probably is…but not for long! Vertical cities are the future, and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready for them!
This week you’ll have the chance to troubleshoot your very own vertical city. You’ll conduct experiments, solve hypothetical problems and learn to think outside the box when it comes to sustainability for this futuristic habitat. How do you transport goods to the people on the 384th floor? Is there a way to grow food in the dark? What alternative power sources might there be if there’s an outage? And how can we protect ourselves against natural disasters?
At the end of the week you’ll learn what it takes to build a thriving vertical city community. You’ll pitch your ideas in a “dragon’s den style” scenario, where you’ll be offered a (hypothetical!) budget to spend on ways to help your community and boost happiness! Discuss the practicalities, outline the pros and cons, make a budget plan, build your design model, and get creative with your presentation as you compete for the dragon’s favour!
Think you’ve got the skills to create a successful world for the future? Can you get inventive with ideas that’ll have you reaching dizzy heights? Let The Experiment begin…
